Concept and Innovation Awards

The Baby Products Association – the UK’s trade association representing manufacturers and suppliers of baby products – is calling for entries to its 2017 Concept & Innovation Awards.

The Concept Award is for product ideas in their visionary stage – which could be as simple as a drawing; whilst the Innovation Award is for designs which are further forward and have already reached prototype stage. a new idea, to product designers and students. The only criterion is that the product must not be on the market prior to 28th March 2017.
An entry form can be downloaded HERE. The deadline for entry is Wednesday 4th January 2017after which shortlisted entrants will be invited to present their product design to a panel of expert judges in central London. Four finalists will be chosen; two Concept finalists and two Innovation finalists; and these will be invited to present their entries to the entire industry at Harrogate International Nursery Fair from 28th to 30th March 2017. The overall winners will be announced at a prestigious awards dinner during the event.
The nursery sector is probably one of the most innovative of all industries with designers and new parents from all walks of life discovering a gap in the market when caring for babies. Finalists in the past have included a high tech portable bottle steriliser using UV light (Steri-Ova); a pushchair which converts to a free-standing platform (Freewalker); a cabin bag with integral baby seat (Bag Rider); a revolutionary car seat which converts to a pushchair (Doona); a post-natal cleansing bottle (Femette); and a pushchair that compacts into a backpack (OmniO Rider). Many of these have proceeded to launch their products successfully to market.
The 2016 winners were Lesley Cartwright Taylor for Kiddierail – a child-sized height adjustable hand rail for adult stair cases; and Mohammed and Akbar Dedat for Baby Throne – a three in one product; a bathing aid for showering babies in homes where there is no bath, a feeding accessory and play chair.
Mohammed not only received extremely valuable feedback from nursery buyers and other industry experts at Harrogate International Nursery Fair in 2016, but also recently joined the Baby Products Association’s UK Pavilion at Kind und Jugend in Cologne (one of the world’s biggest nursery trade shows) and commented: “Kind und Jugend was the perfect platform for us to showcase our product idea on such a big stage.”
