More about the BPA...The BPA is delighted to welcome market research provider GfK to membership and looks forward to sharing interesting industry updates regarding the nursery sector.
The company’s latest report shows that the UK baby care hardware market is now valued at close to £900 million annually and average spend per birth is just over £1,243 excluding nappies, baby food and other grocery products.
Online sales are particularly strong and latest research indicates that every fourth stroller and one in every two baby monitors are purchased online with many parents trading up for more premium products. However, the good news for retailers is that consumers are turning to specialist stores when purchasing high end products such as the more expensive strollers and highchairs and mother and child specialist stores saw an increase of 4% for stroller sales in Q1 2013. Similarly, every second highchair purchased was through a baby specialist store. In comparison, baby monitors are considered to be more of a general electronic device with an average of 70% of monitors sold via the generalist channels such as department stores, supermarkets and online stores. Compared to Q1 2012, baby monitors have grown by over 11% in Q1 2013.
Tullika Bhalla, GfK specialist, comments: “Every second stroller sold in Q1 2013 was over the value of £300 with 2in1 and 3in1 strollers performing particularly well.”
