BPA Retail

Current UK economic performance has been patchy of late to say the very least. A slow down in consumer spending has really hit the high street in recent months. The ongoing increase in the use of the Internet by consumers has also taken its toll on the high street.

This, together with the perpetual growth in scope of the out of town hypermarkets and the continuing pressure from multiples is threatening the existence of many of our independent nursery retailers.

Many suppliers employ a multiple channel approach to selling and consider the independent a vital piece of the jigsaw. Many consumers still like to "touch and feel" the products they are buying and are seeking exceptional customer service. They too see the provision of a real and not virtual "showroom" as the best place to find what they seek.

Recent research has shown that the nursery products market is still in growth and has also identified safety as the uppermost consideration in parents' minds when purchasing items for their baby.

So although there are many threats to the survival of the independent retailer there are quite a few opportunities as well. Opportunities to differentiate themselves through a blend of the traditional and the modern, embracing the very technology that threatens them. Opportunities to work with suppliers to provide goods and services that need more than the Internet for safe and exceptional service delivery.

We at the BPA feel passionately that independent retailers have got a future and can re-invent themselves to compete and prosper in the new shape of things to come.

BPA Retail is dedicated to the support of the Nursery Retail sector.
